FULL FAT SOYA MEAL PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; HOW VIABLE?

Soybean is an important source of high quality and inexpensive protein and oil. With an average protein content of 40% and oil content of 20%, soybean has the highest protein content of all food crops and is second only to groundnuts in terms of oil content amongst food legumes.

Nigeria presently produces about 500,000 MT of Soybean annually making it the largest producer of the product on the African continent. Soybean is a legume which is produced in most the middle belt of the country with Benue state accounting for about 45% of the total production in country.

Soya Beans is a leguminous crop whose importance and economic benefits cannot be over emphasized. Products that can be gotten from Soya Bean include Soy Cake, Soy oil, Full Fat Soya, Soy meal, soy meal, soy flour, soy milk, tofu, textured vegetable protein amongst other things.

In Nigeria, soya beans are mostly produced in the middle belt with benue state accounting for over 70% of the production in Nigeria. Some of the states producing soya beans in Nigeria include Kwara, Kogi, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Nassarawa, Kaduna, Niger, Bauchi, Ogun, and Taraba states. Other states are Adamawa, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Jigawa, Lagos, Plateau, Ekiti and the Federal Capital Territory.

The major emphasis of this study is the commercial production of Full Fat Soya (FFS). In the country, fishery and swine industry, FFS is the main source of protein, fat and energy in diets due to its nutritional characteristics, high level and quality of protein (36 – 42%) and its high level of fat (18- 22%). Well-cooked FFS is brownish in colour and has a pungent cooked smell.

Full fat soybean meal is produced by cooking or roasting the soybeans. It contains complete amount of oil and protein naturally present in soybeans. They valued as a good poultry feed ingredient owing to its high oil (18%) and protein (38%) content.

Full fat soybean contains high fat levels and is a good source of all the essential amino acids.
The heating in the cooking is required to destroy the anti-nutritional factor, trypsin inhibitor. If this trypsin inhibitor is not destroyed there will be reduced digestion of protein and growth can suffer.

Full fat soybean meal can be included in the diets of pigs, poultry, cattle, sheep and horses of all ages.

With the high fat levels full fat soybean can be used as a source of linoleic acid for layer hen feeds. The level of linoleic acid in the feed will contribute to the egg weight and the grading of the eggs.
The demand for FFS exceeds supply owing to its importance as a constituent of animal feeds all over the world e.g. Broilers eat broiler mash which must contain 55% FFS to take care of animal’s energy and protein needs. Nigeria with a population of over 165 million people is a large market for poultry, swine and fish products which automatically creates a market for the food being eaten by these animals.

ODOURLESS FUFU FLOUR PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Nigerian agriculture is characterized by considerable regional and crop diversity.  Analysis of this sector, particularly the food sub-sector, is fraught with serious data problems.  However, the available statistics provide a broad overview of development in agriculture upon which we can make some broad generalizations about its role in economic development and structural change in Nigeria.

In the 1960s, the agricultural sector was the most important in terms of contributions to domestic production, employment and foreign exchange earnings.  The situation remained almost the same three decades later with the exception that it is no longer the principal foreign exchange earner, a role now being played by oil.

The sector remained stagnant during the oil boom decade of the 1970s, and this accounted largely for the declining share of its contributions.  The trend in the share of agriculture in the GDP shows a substantial variation and long-term decline from 60% in the early 1960s through 48.8% in the 1970s and 22.2% in the 1980s. Unstable and often inappropriate economic policies (of pricing, trade and exchange rate), the relative neglect of the sector and the negative impact of oil boom were also important factors responsible for the decline in its contributions.

On its diversity, Nigerian agriculture features tree and food crops, forestry, livestock and fisheries.  In 1993 at 1984 constant factor cost, crops (the major source of food) accounted for about 30% of the Gross Domestic Products (GDP), livestock about 5%, forestry and wildlife about 1.3% and fisheries accounted 1.2%.

One of the food crops grown in Nigeria is Cassava tubers. Cassava is the most important root crop in Nigeria. Apart from being a staple crop in both rural and urban household’s cassava is a major source of income to cassava farmers and processors in the rural areas.
Cassava alone contributes about 45% of agricultural GDP in Nigeria for food or domestic purposes but its industrial processing and utilization has been very limited. Currently, the country produces about 40,000,000 tons of the cassava tubers annually.

Some of states that cassava tubers is produced in large quantity in Nigeria includes Anambra, Imo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Osun, Ebonyi, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Kogi and Abia.

Fufu Flour is fermented wet-paste made from cassava. Fufu is very rich in carbohydrate and has smooth texture. It is ranked next to gari as an indigenous food of most Nigerians in the south. Traditionally, it is produced in the wet form with moisture content of 40-50 per cent. This makes the product highly perishable with a short shelf life compared with gari and lafun, which are in granular form with moisture content below 10 per cent.

In order to increase it shelf live, improved fufu production process has been developed. The improved production process is starts by peeling of roots, washing, cutting into pieces and steeping in water to ferment for 3–4 days. The fermented mash is pounded or simply washed over a fine sieve to remove fibre and the water

expelled from the starch extract by pressing through muslin cloth to produce fufu.

The equipments required for fufu production are listed below

Weighing Balance
Washing machine
Presser
Grater
Rotary Dryer
Disc or pin milling machine
Sealer

Nigeria has a large, sustainable and expanding market for cassava fufu. With a population of over 165 million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for fufu.

LAUNDRY SOAP PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Soap is the traditional washing compound made from the saponification of oil fats and caustic alkali. Commercially, the fat is sourced from tallow, lard, palm oil, palm kernel oil, coconut oil, marine oil, etc. Although at present, palm oil and palm kernel oil for the local soap making in Nigeria are readily available, nearly all the alkali for soap making is imported.

Soaps are cleaning products that have become an essential part in our daily lives. Cleaning products play an essential role by safely and effectively removing dirts, germs and other contaminants, and thus promote a hygienic lifestyle. There are therefore, indispensable items as a daily requirement in homes, offices, schools, hospitals, restaurants etc

The product is in great demands in Nigeria. Considering the estimated national population of 165 million and per capita consumption of 30 tablets, the national demand for soap is estimated at 4,950 million tablets per annum.

The industry has developed both in the small scale and organized sector. Laundry soap production is usually done by small scale industries and 90% of the production of laundry soap is in the small-scale sector. Toilet soap is however dominated by the multinational units.
The industry has developed both in the small scale and organized sector. Laundry soap production is usually done by small scale industries and 90% of the production of laundry soap is in the small-scale sector. Toilet soap is however dominated by the multinational units.

The production process for laundry soap is discussed below
The required raw materials are weighed accurately according to the formulation. The mixed oils are taken in a pan and heated to approximately 70 degrees centigrade.

Caustic soda solution is added for saponification reaction. Soap is formed, builders like sodium silicate soap stone, talc, etc are added when the saponification is over.

Though mixing of the material is made colour all perfumes are added. Finally, the soap is transferred to rames at all levels to settle down. The wet soap is taken out of the frames, cut into bars, stamped and packed.

The major raw materials for laundry soap production are animal fat or vegetable fat, caustic soda, soda ash, sodium silicate, fragrances, colourant and so on. Soap reactor, Cutting machine, Shaping machine, Plodder, Stamping machine and moulders are some of the equipments required in the production of soap.

FERTILIZER PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

In Nigeria, agriculture has remained the largest sector of the economy.  It generates employment for about 70% of Nigeria’s population and contributes about 40% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with crops accounting for 80%, livestock 13%, forestry 3% and fishery 4%. It plays significant roles in the nation’s economic development.
These roles include: contribution to the country’s gross domestic product; source of income and decent living for a large proportion of the population; provision of adequate food for the people; supply of raw materials required by the industrial sector; generation of foreign exchange through export; provision of employment opportunities for the teeming population.

Nigeria has a land area of 98.3m hectares. At present about 34m hectares or 48% are under cultivation. Under the (1999) Constitution, responsibility for agricultural and rural development is shared among the federal, state and local governments. There is no doubt that considering the vast area of uncultivated land coupled with the natural fertility of its soil, Nigeria has great agricultural potentials.

Fertilizer is a very important input in Agriculture that increases food production and if Nigeria is to achieve food security, proper attention has to be given to the production and distribution of fertilizer.

Fertilizer is any organic or inorganic material of natural or synthetic origin (other than liming materials) that is added to soil to supply one or more plant nutrients essential to the growth of plants. Conservative estimates report 30 to 50% of crop yields are attributed to natural or synthetic commercial fertilizer.

The most common type of fertiliser in Nigeria is the in-organic type in different NPK composition. N.P.K here stands for Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium. The composition is made depending on the type of soil and crops.

The major raw materials for fertilizer production include - ammonia gas, phosphoric acid, Phosphate Powder, Potash, Calcium Carbonate, Clay and fillers. All these raw materials are abundant in Nigeria.

It is a fact that the fertilizer industry is a very large and complicated one and it will be impossible for government to coordinate and control the market efficiently. About 70% of the population (about 105 million people) are engaged in small, medium or large –scale farming or other agro related business.

Fertilizer consumption (kilograms per hectare of arable land) in Nigeria was 2.12 as of 2009. Its highest value over the past 7 years was 9.98 in 2006, while its lowest value was 2.12 in 2009.

The market for fertilizer in Nigeria is national ,expanding and sustainable. The market is second only to petroleum products in Nigeria. Various tiers of government gives great priority to it's availability and distribution.

It is important to note that over 80% of all the fertilizer consumed in the country is imported.

OPPORTUNITIES IN TALC BENEFICIATION IN NIGERIA; INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Talc, which is a soft, hydrous magnesium silicate (3Mg04Si02H20), is used in a wide range of industries including the manufacture of ceramics, paints, paper, and asphalt roofing. The end-uses for talc are determined by variables such as chemical and mineralogical composition, particle size and shape, specific gravity, hardness, and color.

An estimated reserve of over 100 million tonnes of talc has been obtained in Niger, Osun, Kogi, Kwara, Ogun, Taraba and Kaduna States. The colour of the Nigerian talc varies from white through milky-white to grey.

Talc has various industrial applications. The paint, cosmetics, fertilizer, pharmaceutical and ceramic industries are the most dominant users of talc. It is also used as lubricants in leather making, laboratory table tops, switch boards, toilet powder and for removing grease from cloth.

Beneficiation is a variety of processes whereby extracted ore from mining is separated into mineral and gangue, the former suitable for further processing or direct use.

Talc's potential applications are virtually unlimited. Through beneficiation, talc can be processed into different grades suitable for use as fillers in different industries which includes pharmaceuticals, Industrial, Cosmetics etc

Talc beneficiation usually uses hand picking, photoelectric picking, electrostatic dressing, flotation, dry or wet magnetic separation, dry grinding air,dry and wet grinding in mineral beneficiation, process crusher dry and wet grinding in mineral beneficiation.

Talc enjoys a ready made market in Nigeria. In spite of the high national demand which is over 70,000 tonnes per annum, there are a few talc processing industry in the country producing about 15,000 tonnes per annum.

Thus, over 90 % of the talc used in Nigerian industries is imported. However, if the Nigeria talc is exploited and processed properly, it would not only satisfy the local demand, but would also be ready for export because of the abundant reserves in the country.

OPPORTUNITIES IN KAOLIN BENEFICIATION IN NIGERIA; INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Kaolin is an important and widely used industrial mineral which is refined from Kaolinite. It is a naturally – occurring mineral of the clay family and may contain a number of impurities such as quartz, feldspar, tourmaline, ilmenite, zircon, etc, which were derived from the parent rock.

The bulk of the Kaolinitic clay deposits in the country are either sedimentary or residual in origin and are usually associated with granitic rocks. Occurrences of kaolin have been recorded in different parts of the country and specific abundant deposits have been identified in parts of Enugu, Anambra, Kaduna,Katsina, Plateau, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Borno States.

Kaolin has many industrial applications in paper, ceramic, rubber, and plastics industries. Paper industry is the main consumer where Kaolin is used as filler in the sheet and coating on the surface of the sheet and new applications are still being discovered. It is used, among others, in paper, paint, rubber, plastics and ceramics industries.

Kaolin beneficiation plant depends on the nature of the crude ore and product end use. There are two kinds of application process in industrial production line: dry process and wet process. Usually the hard kaolin choose dry beneficiation plant and soft kaolin adopt wet beneficiation plant.

In the kaolin beneficiation process, crushing is the important procedure. Usually kaolin crushing process includes primary crushing and secondary crushing. Cone crusher is used as kaolin crusher in the kaolin primary crushing process. It can crush kaolin into small pieces with the size less than 25mm. Kaolin Cone crusher is used in kaolin secondary crushing process. Crushed kaolin after cone crusher is less than 6.35mm.

Kaolin beneficiation plant mainly including kaolin crusher, kaolin washer machine, kaolin vibrating screen, kaolin flotation machine, kaolin dryer machine, kaolin magnetic separator.

Kaolin beneficiation technology applies hydrocyclon classification; sometime also use centrifugal classifier, sand mill, high gradient magnetic separator, flotation separator etc.

Nigerian Kaolin is known to have purity as high as 90% and an estimated that the annual national demand for kaolin is over 350,000 tones with local production meeting about 80% of the demand and the remaining sourced through importation.
